The Pilot's Field Repair Kit — What I Actually Use on Race Day
Race day without a field repair kit is a bet that nothing breaks. I learned this the hard way at a local race in 2022. Prop bolt stripped mid-mound The screw torque guide helps prevent stripped bolts.. No replacement bolt. I flew the rest of the rounds with a missing prop and wondered why I kept losing altitude in turns.
What Is Actually in My Kit
Not everything. Just the things that have actually saved a run:
Screws and Bolts
- M3x8mm titanium bolts — 4 spare per motor mount position
- M2.5x6mm for FC standoffs
- Small zip ties, 4-inch, 10 count
Soldering
- Butane micro torch — for motor lead joins when a connector breaks
- Solder, thin gauge, leaded (leaded flows better for field work)
- Helping hands tool — the magnetic base kind
Diagnostics
- Multimeter — checks battery voltage, continuity on motor phases
- USB-C betaflight adapter — flash firmware without full disassembly
The Part Nobody Thinks About
Spare antenna. Not a backup for your VTX antenna — a replacement. The RHCP mushroom antenna on your goggles is the most likely thing to break at a race. It catches on a gate, a net, someone's bag. One hard knock and the SMA connector cracks internally. If you have a spare, you swap and fly the next round. If you do not, you are done for the day.
