SpeedyBee F405 V4 BEC Fix — The $8 Part That'll Save Your Stack

April 15, 2026 · Lee

Your SpeedyBee F405 V4 died. Or it's running warm and you're wondering when the magic smoke is coming. Here's what's actually happening and how to fix it properly.

The Actual Problem

The MP2359 regulator on the V4 is rated at 24V input, 28V absolute maximum. Full charge 6S is 25.2V. You're at the edge of spec before any load spike.

When your VTX pulls peak current during a punch-out and your receiver draws power simultaneously, the regulator overheats. Thermal throttles — you get brownouts. Or it dies completely and releases the magic smoke.

This isn't a defective board. It's a spec limitation that the product listing doesn't explain because that's not a great sales pitch.

The Fix

Stop trying to work around the internal BEC. Just use an external one.

For 6S builds: dedicated 5V UBEC rated for 30V+ input. Spare RF 5V UBEC or Matek 5V/2A. Wire it directly to battery, not through the FC. Connect output to VTX and receiver power pins.

This takes about 20 minutes Adding a capacitor also helps stabilize power delivery. and costs roughly $8. It's not complicated.

Also — add a 1,000 microfarad low-ESR capacitor at the ESC power input, within 2cm of the pads. This absorbs voltage spikes before they reach the BEC. Get Nichicon ULD or Rubycon ZL. The generic "low-ESR" Amazon caps? They measure 500-2000 milliohm at 100kHz. Completely useless for spike suppression. You need sub-20 milliohm at 100kHz.

Warning Signs

If your FC feels warm after landing The V4 vs V3 comparison covers BEC differences between the two stacks.: the BEC is running hot, not failing yet. This is your window.

Brownouts during high-throttle: the BEC is thermal throttling. Fix it before your next flight.

Smell burning: it's too late. The smoke is gone and so is your stack.

Before You Fly 6S

  • BEC input rating must exceed full-charge battery voltage by at least 5V
  • VTX and receiver on separate BEC from FC when possible
  • 1,000 microfarad low-ESR cap at ESC power input
  • Check BEC temp after your first post-build flight
